Saturday, 29 January through Saturday, 5 March 2011 Janaki Lennie: Please join us in welcoming well-known Australian painter Janaki Lennie back to Houston for her first solo show in Texas since 2006. Janaki is a landscape artist whose paintings portray the "sometimes strained relationship between nature and human industry," according to Matthew Bourbon writing in ArtForum. Janaki has earned an international reputation since her days as a student then as an adjunct professor of art at the University of Houston. She has been recognized not only for her unique perspective on the encroachment of urban elements into natural environments, but also for her extraordinary technical skills in translating that vision into exquisitely haunting paintings. The exhibition features work from her acclaimed Breathing Space series painted while she lived in Houston, and the Islands series she created during her recent time in Newfoundland. In January 2011, Janaki is receiving the prestigious "Star of Australia" Award at the Australian-American Chamber of Commerce Gala, a part of the national G'Day USA program organized by the Australian government. She has won numerous fellowships, commissions, and awards for her paintings and drawings. Her work hangs in the permanent collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, the Federal Reserve Bank Houston Branch, Microsoft Corporation, Art Bank Australia, Weatherford Company, University of Houston, Vinson and Elkins, and numerous other public and private collections. This exhibition is part of Booker•Lowe's commitment to showcase contemporary Australian art in addition to exhibiting fine art by indigenous artists. Booker•Lowe Gallery currently offers the largest collection of Australian Aboriginal artworks for sale in the Americas. |
