Now Showing . . . through Saturday, December 14th
Australian Aboriginal Art: Beyond Time Booker-Lowe is partnering with Australia’s oldest indigenous art gallery, Coo-ee Gallery (Bondi Beach and Paddington NSW) to showcase 30+ paintings by “old masters,” leading artists, and exciting new talents. Beyond Time features masterworks by well-known painters who helped launch the Australian Aboriginal art movement in the 1970s, including Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri and Emily Kngwarreye; senior artists who have continued and expanded the movement both geographically and stylistically, such as Judy Watson Napangardi and Gabrielle Possum Nungarrayi; and emerging artists who are building on the legacies, e.g., Genevieve Kemarre Loy, Patrick Tjungurrayi and Jennifer Ingkatji. [See the Beyond Time catalogue- with the stories behind some of the featured paintings - on this website!] Click here to visit the exhibition catalogue. Adrian Newstead, founder of Coo-ee Gallery, is one of Australia’s leading experts on Aboriginal art, and author of “The Dealer is the Devil: An Insider’s History of the Aboriginal Art Trade,” a fascinating read about his 30+ years working with indigenous artists. He is a former president of the Indigenous Art Trade Association (Booker-Lowe was the first international member!), and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to the museum and galleries sector in 2016. We are honored to partner with Adrian and the Coo-ee staff to present Beyond Time !
